Who Was Juanita Nielsen?

Juanita Nielsen was a prominent journalist, activist, and heiress who became a central figure in the fight to preserve Sydney’s historic Victoria Street from demolition in the 1970s. As the editor of her own newspaper, Now, Juanita used her platform to expose corruption and oppose powerful developers who sought to replace low-income housing with high-rise buildings. Her outspoken activism made her a target for developers and underworld figures, as she refused to back down from defending the rights of local residents. On July 4, 1975, Juanita mysteriously disappeared, and it is widely believed that her activism led to her murder, though her body was never found, and the case remains unsolved to this day.

Tour Highlights:

• Victoria Street: We begin here with an introduction to Juanita Nielsen’s fight against developers like Frank Theeman, who sought to demolish the historic homes along Victoria Street. You will hear about the tensions brewing in Kings Cross during the 1960s and 1970s and how her activism put her in direct conflict with dangerous individuals.
• 202 Victoria Street: Our first stop is Juanita’s home and office, where she published Now, her social newspaper that became dedicated to exposing the corruption threatening her neighbourhood. What happened in the days leading to her disappearance in June and July 1975?
• 115 Victoria Street: We will stop at Mick Fowler’s former home, where he and Jack Mundey organised protests with the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) to protect Victoria Street from demolition. Watch historical footage of these demonstrations and hear how Juanita’s partnership with the BLF turned the tide in the fight for community preservation.
• Esther George’s Murder: Investigate how the unsolved murder of Esther George prompted Juanita Nielsen to dig deeper into the corruption and criminal elements around her. Her increasing involvement in this world may have sealed her fate as she took a stand against the powerful. We will visit the crime scene.

• Casinos & Brothels: See where all the old casinos and brothels were located along the back lanes. Who was Detective Fred Krahe? What was his connection?
• Carousel Club: See where this club once stood, where Junita was last seen alive. Why did she come here? What happened to her?
• Cover-Up and Aftermath: Finally, we will explore the theories surrounding Juanita’s disappearance and how her story became embroiled in a broader web of corruption involving politicians, developers, and the criminal elite of Kings Cross. The tour will culminate at the Potts Point Hotel, where we will reflect on Juanita Nielsen’s legacy and the unanswered questions.
